CIRCA 1920'S - 1930'S
Adorable Chubby Vintage 1920's to 1930's Mama
Composition Doll
Some dolls that are considered mama dolls commenced
production as early as 1915; however, the dolls didn't
become wildly popular until the early 1920s. The
Georgene Averill company played a major part in the
development of the doll, and even was granted a patent
for a mama doll in 1918. By 1922, American companies
such as Effanbee, Horsman, Ideal and others were
producing mama dolls. By the mid 1920s, many American
companies were producing the dolls. By the late 1920s,
demands for the dolls slowed down somewhat and
slightly slimmer mama dolls started to come into vogue.
Mama dolls continued to be produced, in their classic
form, into the early 1940s.
We have here an adorable quite chubby baby doll.
Without a doubt she is one of my favorites! She
must have eaten too many Sweet Potatoes as she
is almost as wide as she is tall! If you love big,
big baby dolls this one is for you. She is so
cuddly and sweet and we have named her "Sweet
Potato". She stands at 27 inches tall and 26
inches around the middle. She is real big with fat
chubby arms and legs, a huge tummy with her
precious round baby face. She has composition
arms, legs and head with a cloth body in excellent
shape. She does have a little rolling over
because of her tummy so if you would like to help
her by giving her a little nudge would be quite
helpful. She looks very much like the Effanbee
Bubbles dolls and just maybe that is who she was
modeled after or maybe vice versa! She has
molded blond hair, hazel sleep eyes with beautiful
eyelashes and painted eyebrows and lower
lashes, four teeth and pink molded tongue. She
has the cutest rosy chubby cheeks, rosy lips and
absolutely gorgeous coloring. She is softly
blushed on the top of her dimpled knees and the
top of her hands and feet. She is unmarked but is
obviously from the early 30's to 40's as that's
when these dolls were made. She is wearing an
adorable light vintage lavender dress with a white
lace edged collar with a white vintage bonnet also
with lots of lace. She is wearing cute little pink
embroidered stockings and white leather tie baby
shoes. She was completely restored and sealed
to prevent crazing so she will last without a doubt
another 80 years.
This baby doll is a total joy to hold and love and
once you see her in person you won't ever want
to let her go. She is just like having a real baby in
size (she weighs six pounds) and appearance.
